SUMMARY:Workshop: Poetry Portal - Writing Through the Senses with Kat Charles
DESCRIPTION:What is poetry\, really? What makes it enjoyable\, and how do you begin writing something you could call a poem? How can you use your sensory experiences to create poetry? \nThis workshop will explore different accessible ways to begin writing a poem by immersing participants into all of their senses. Our main tools will be our senses—our portals to self-expression and connection with others—which we will hone with short writing exercises. Participants will leave the workshop with new writing they can share with their loved ones and new tools to nurture a creative writing practice. \nThis workshop is offered in English. It is adaptable to the needs and abilities of all participants. Materials to awaken the senses will be provided\, but please feel free to bring your own writing or art-making supplies as well. Expect a workshop filled with new experiences\, playfulness\, joy and the power of creativity. Thanks to the generosity of the Quebec Writers’ Federation\, we are able to offer this workshop on a by-donation basis. \nAbout the facilitator \nKathleen Charles is a queer\, Haitian songstress and writer based in Tio’tia:ke (Montreal). Their practice is heavily informed by black feminist thought\, dystopian literature\, decolonisation\, and the liberatory nature of traditional Haitian music\, dance\, and spirituality. Charles has delivered performances for organizations such as Pride Montreal (2018)\, and Black Theatre Workshop (2021). They were also a part of three iterations of Afro Drag Montreal\, which made its world premiere at the UK pride film festival last year (2024).

SUMMARY:Taking Your Space: A Workshop in Authenticity and Personal Ownership in Performance with Sandra Bouza
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 8 | 10:00 AM \nIn a world full of expectations—how we should act\, speak\, feel—it’s easy for our true artistic voice to get buried beneath layers of judgment and social conditioning. For musicians\, singers\, dancers\, and creatives of all kinds\, those invisible pressures can quietly limit how freely we express ourselves. \nTaking Your Space is an interactive workshop designed to help artists reconnect with their authentic voice and creative presence. \nLed by acclaimed singer-songwriter Sandra Bouza\, the session combines guided exercises and reflective practices that explore how we show up in performance. Participants will experiment with ways to release internalized expectations\, protect their emotional and creative space\, and step into their work with greater honesty\, confidence\, and ownership. \nRooted in the spirit of storytelling traditions and soulful performance\, this workshop invites you to reconnect with the part of your artistry that is real\, expressive\, and uniquely yours. \nThis is a supportive space where you are welcome to be too much\, too emotional\, too real—because powerful art comes from full connection to yourself. \nWhether you’re a seasoned performer or someone exploring your creative voice\, you’re invited to come curious\, open\, and ready to take up the space your art deserves. \nWho this workshop is for \n\nMusicians and singers\nDancers and performers\nWriters\, storytellers\, and other creatives\nAnyone interested in authenticity and presence in creative work\n\nA Pay-What-You-Can Event \nTo keep this experience accessible to the community\, this workshop is offered on a pay-what-you-can basis. If you’re able to contribute more\, your support helps make creative opportunities like this possible for others. \nSpaces are limited to keep the experience intimate.
