SUMMARY:Workshop: Poetry Portal - Writing Through the Senses with Kat Charles
DESCRIPTION:What is poetry\, really? What makes it enjoyable\, and how do you begin writing something you could call a poem? How can you use your sensory experiences to create poetry? \nThis workshop will explore different accessible ways to begin writing a poem by immersing participants into all of their senses. Our main tools will be our senses—our portals to self-expression and connection with others—which we will hone with short writing exercises. Participants will leave the workshop with new writing they can share with their loved ones and new tools to nurture a creative writing practice. \nThis workshop is offered in English. It is adaptable to the needs and abilities of all participants. Materials to awaken the senses will be provided\, but please feel free to bring your own writing or art-making supplies as well. Expect a workshop filled with new experiences\, playfulness\, joy and the power of creativity. Thanks to the generosity of the Quebec Writers’ Federation\, we are able to offer this workshop on a by-donation basis. \nAbout the facilitator \nKathleen Charles is a queer\, Haitian songstress and writer based in Tio’tia:ke (Montreal). Their practice is heavily informed by black feminist thought\, dystopian literature\, decolonisation\, and the liberatory nature of traditional Haitian music\, dance\, and spirituality. Charles has delivered performances for organizations such as Pride Montreal (2018)\, and Black Theatre Workshop (2021). They were also a part of three iterations of Afro Drag Montreal\, which made its world premiere at the UK pride film festival last year (2024).

SUMMARY:Concert - Mallory Chipman
DESCRIPTION:“…Stunning…on another level…Mallory’s approach opens up previously unexplored ways of thinking about melody. Some of the finest folk-rock currently being made.” -Amplify Music Magazine \nAward-winning Alberta singer-songwriter Mallory Chipman is quickly becoming one of the most compelling voices in contemporary Canadian folk and roots music. Known for her soaring vocals\, vivid songwriting\, and emotionally rich performances\, Chipman creates concerts that are both intimate and cinematic — full of stories that linger long after the final song. \nHer recent album\, Songs to a Wild God\, hit #5 on the Folk International Charts\, and has been featured on NPR\, CBC\, and SiriusXM Radio. She has opened for Jann Arden\, Madeleine Peyroux\, and has sung back-up for the legendary rock band\, Heart\, but most notably continues to stun with her solo project\, described as “profoundly moving” by Celtic Music Radio. \nWith a vast touring history and new album on the way in early 2027\, Chipman crafts songs that feel timeless\, placing her firmly within the lineage of great storytellers” (Happy Mag Australia)\, establishing her as an instant classic in the Canadian roots music scene. In 2026 she was nominated for Solo Artist of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards and Roots Artist of the Year at the Country Music Alberta Awards. \n“A masterclass in emotional range and musical craftsmanship.”– Happy Mag\, Australia“Gutsy\, whilst also placing [herself] with enthusiastic abandonment into the longer tradition of the great singer-songwriters”– Americana UK
