The Gimli Glider – 40th Anniversary

40 years ago (July 23) A new Air Canada Boeing 767 at 41,000 feet ran out of fuel near Red Lake, Ontario, and instantly became a glider. In an amazing feat of piloting and airmanship, Captain Bob Pearson and First Officer Maurice Quintal were able to land the large, heavy, and powerless commercial airliner with 61 passengers and 6 flight attendants on a short runway at a former RCAF airport in Gimli, Manitoba without any loss of life. It was a major historic occurrence in the history of Aviation.
